The MaHIMA Student Concierge Experience
By Melanie Marston
As most students pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Health Information with the goal of becoming RHIT certified, hearing of all the changes within the healthcare field, I was feeling a little overwhelmed. Although I have been working in the medical field for over 20 years, including my current position of 11 years in an outpatient pediatric clinic, the many changes, from ICD-10 to measures that need to be met along with new standards of patient care, I began to wonder if this is the right choice for me.
After meeting Jackie Judd and Marianne Garfi at a Fisher College Event and learning about the many MaHIMA student opportunities I became excited again! I couldn’t wait to apply for the Student Concierge Position! I was sure that if I were selected, it would be a great chance to learn more about the profession and network with HIM leaders in MA. Now, this was not without some apprehension … Jackie asked me to introduce a speaker and my first reaction was a solid NO! However, she was so encouraging and reassured me that she would be there, and that taking on this challenge would only benefit me, I pushed my fears aside and said yes!
When I arrived at the venue, I was greeted and welcomed by everyone! The students received a volunteer shirt to wear and it was announced that we were all wearing blue and there to help in any way. This set the tone for the attendees to reach out to us, ask us questions and give us words of advice. We got to meet people working in all aspects of HIM, Vendors and some of us even won prizes!
I appreciate this eye-opening opportunity to attend the Conference as Student Concierge and now can say that this career change is the right decision for me! Knowing that Jackie, Marianne and other members of the Communications Committee were always within eye sight was a great reminder that they were there, not only for the Conference, but to mentor and guide students pursuing a career change. I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for me to attend and volunteer as well as everyone who took the time to engage with me throughout the day.
