Carine is a student at Fisher College, pursuing a certificate in Medical Coding. She plans to graduate in May 2018.
We asked Carine what drew her to HIM as an area of study and as a future career?
“I have been working as a Medical Assistant for the past 20 years, and Medical Billing was always in the back of mind as an interest but I never pursued it. As I’m getting older, the time feels right to follow my interest and make a career change. While taking classes through the Workforce Development program at BIDMC. I met the Workforce Development Program Administrator. Throughout the years we’ve and spoken about making a career change but I was unsure which way to go and what suits me best. We worked together to map out goals and met monthly so that I could update on my progress. I was able to use my new knowledge to find information on getting the proper training. In August of 2016, I applied to Fisher College!”
What aspects of HIM do you find most interesting? Where do you plan to focus your learning?
“Working in an HIM department would be rewarding. I can still help patients without working with them directly. I enjoy a fast-past work environment and through additional education and certification, there are plenty of career growth opportunities.”
What are you interested in pursuing after you graduate?
“After graduation, I will continue my education. I plan to obtain my Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology (HIT) and then on to my ultimate goal of a Bachelor’s in HIM.”
