10:00am – Brain Compression -Clinical Aspects
Summary: Brai
n compression and cerebral edema are the consequence of brain abnormalities
that can be life-threatening. Properly documenting these diagnoses in the
medical record is important to accurately reflect patient severity of illne
ss. Clinicians may document only “mass effect” or “midline shift,” or a ne
urosurgeon may only state that she performed a “decompression” or “tumor re
section.” However, none of these phrases allows coders to capture the speci
fic diagnoses of brain compression and cerebral edema. This session will fo
cus on the cause, presentation and treatment of these disorders.
