8:00am – Being a Change Agent
Summary:  Have you heard of the term ‘growth mindset’?  What exactly does that mean?  In this session, we will dive in to what it means to be a change agent with a growth mindset.  We will tap into emotional intelligence, learn to be vulnerable, and strengthen empathy.  You will discover how to reframe feedback as an opportunity to grow, assume positive intent, ask questions to avoid being defensive, and reflect on feedback. Learn how to be adaptable and navigate your experiences gracefully to grow in your career. Your mindset, above all else, will have a major impact on whether you succeed.
Presenter:  Laura Marquez, MHA – AVP IT Applications, UCONN Health
Laura Marquez is the Assistant Vice President for IT Applications at UConn Health, in Farmington, CT. Marquez brings more than 20 years of healthcare experience leading dynamic teams, driving innovation, and bringing out the best in people by tapping into their strengths. She has shared ideas to improve the workplace with empathy as a TEDx speaker, and is regarded as a servant leader with a strong focus on the patient experience

9:00am – The First Year of No Surprises Act Implementation: Considerations for Providers
Summary:  One year after enactment by Congress, after several months of rulemaking and guidance, the No Surprises Act went into effect January 1 of this year. This session discusses key elements of the No Surprises Act and its implementing regulations, as well as key timing points from both the federal and Massachusetts perspectives. The presentation will address issues for the ambulatory space including the applicability and satisfaction of the good faith estimate requirement, and determination of the applicability of the out-of-network balance billing rules.
Presenter:  Erik Schulwolf, Associate, Foley Hoag, LLP
Erik Schulwolf is an Associate in Foley Hoag’s Administrative Department. He works on health care, life sciences, and infrastructure and construction matters. Erik specializes in advising cutting-edge life sciences companies on reimbursement and compliance issues related to their products. In particular, Erik does extensive work with molecular diagnostic laboratories on issues including reimbursement from government and private payers, compliance with fraud and abuse and federal price reporting laws, and advocacy with federal and state agencies. Erik also provides reimbursement, compliance, and federal and state government strategies advice to pharmaceutical manufacturers and providers. Erik also assists mass transportation agencies and municipalities with respect to contracting and real estate issues related to development projects.

10:00am – Brain Compression -Clinical Aspects
Summary: Brain compression and cerebral edema are the consequence of brain abnormalities that can be life-threatening. Properly documenting these diagnoses in the medical record is important to accurately reflect patient severity of illness.  Clinicians may document only “mass effect” or “midline shift,” or a neurosurgeon may only state that she performed a “decompression” or “tumor resection.” However, none of these phrases allows coders to capture the specific diagnoses of brain compression and cerebral edema. This session will focus on the cause, presentation and treatment of these disorders.
Presenter: Amy Sanderson, MD, Associate in Critical Care Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine and Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia, Harvard Medical School
Dr. Amy Sanderson is the Physician Advisor for the Clinical Documentation Improvement Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is interested in the impact of diagnosis documentation on various aspects of medical care, including patient care, measures of patient acuity, quality metrics, research database accuracy, and healthcare reimbursement. She is currently involved in several research studies, collaborating with other physician advisors from free-standing children’s hospitals.

Melissa Roberts, MHA, RHIT, has 22 years’ experience in the HIM and Coding field. She has been responsible for Coding Compliance, Inpatient Coding, Outpatient Coding, Physician Coding, CDI, HIM, and Consulting in her past positions. She is currently the Director of Coding for Centura Health and the MaHIMA Director of Education.
