Learner Outcomes:  The World Health Assembly approved a resolution to adopt the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, (ICD-11) on May 25, 2019. It will go into effect as the new international standard on January 1, 2022. This workshop will introduce the ICD-11 Foundation, as designed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and its Mortality and Morbidity Statistics (MMS) linearization, including the WHO coding guidance. Learners will practice classifying conditions using the WHO coding tool and browser and provide feedback on various aspects of using ICD-11 MMS in its native form. By the end of this session learners will:

1.   Classify 50 common diagnoses using the WHO ICD-11 MMS coding tool, browser and guidelines.

2.   Apply the WHO ICD-11 MMS guidelines for the use of morbidity code assignment.

3.   Compare and contrast the outcome of ICD-11 MMS code assignments with ICD-10-CM.

Presentation Content:
1.   The faculty will provide an overview of ICD-11 structure and content, highlighting new classification concepts and methods such as pre- and post-coordination, cluster coding, multiple parenting and linearizations

2.   The faculty will provide instructions regarding the ICD-11 classification guidelines, especially for the mandatory use of additional codes and post-coordination. Where apparent, differences from current US coding guidelines will be highlighted.

3.   All learners will receive a document with 50 common diagnoses. They will be able to use either a computer, tablet or a smartphone to access the WHO coding tool and/or browser, search for the diagnosis and assign the appropriate ICD-11 MMS code(s).

4.   The faculty will review all of the correct codes for the diagnoses with the audience. Discussion and questions are expected.

5.   All learners will be asked to complete a short survey regarding the use of ICD-11 MMS and the WHO tools, focused on ease of use and including questions such as whether or not the learners believe a clinical modification is needed to replace current uses of ICD-10-CM in the US.

This session will receive a total of 3 CEU.  Zoom webinar details for this session will be sent with the confirmation after the registration process is completed.
