Two codes are required when a patient has a periprosthetic fracture. These are not considered complications of the prosthesis as the prosthesis, itself is not fractured but the area around the prosthesis is fractured). The fractures can occur as a result of trauma or a pathological condition. A code for the periprosthetic fracture (M97-) AND the specific type of fracture (trauma or pathological) should be assigned. The sequencing will depend on the circumstances of the admission. (Coding Clinic 4Q 2016, pages 42-43).
