Cheryl Rau, RHIT
Winner of 2018 MaHIMA Professional Achievement Award
While finishing her last HIM classes at Fisher College, where she was on the Dean’s List, Cheryl Rau interned at Morton Hospital. Following graduation in 2011, Cheryl returned to Morton as a coder. After a couple of years she left and moved on to another positon at another facility during which time she received her RHIT.
When Southcoast Hospital and Acadia Behavioral Health Hospital established Southcoast Behavioral Health Hospital as a joint venture, Cheryl became the new facility’s first HIM Director and Privacy Officer. In this role, she built an HIM department and Compliancy and Privacy Department from the ground up. This was a huge undertaking and Cheryl took the challenge straight on.
Cheryl exhibits ambition and vitality, and strives always to be the best she can be. She always has been determined to learn and grow in her profession. Cheryl was honored with the 2015 Women Leaders in Behavioral Health award from Universal Health Systems. Cheryl served on the board for the Center for Health Information Analytics Technical Advisory Group (CHIA TAG) for the implementation of mental and behavioral health for research and funding projects
Always one to give back, Cheryl has sponsored students in HIM internships from Fisher College at two different hospitals; currently holds a seat on the Curriculum Board for Fisher College for the HIM program; and serves on the Legislative Affairs Committee for MaHIMA where she assisted in writing the Medicolegal Guide to Health Record Information.
