Mary Beth Brouillard, MBA, RHIA,

Winner of 2018 MaHIMA Outstanding Mentor Award

Mary Beth Brouillard was nominated for the MaHIMA Outstanding Mentor Award by Patricia Fountain, BS, RN, MBA, CCDS, a colleague who knows first-hand the impact Mary Beth has on others.  The following is excerpted from the nomination:

I am writing this letter to nominate Mary Beth Brouillard, MBA, RHIA, Market Director, HIM/Coding/CDI Operations for Tenet Healthcare Corporation – MA/SC Hospitals for the MaHIMA Outstanding Mentor Award.

I first met Mary Beth when applying for the St Vincent Hospital CDI/CDI Manager position in Feb of 2010.  From my first interaction with her during the interview process, I knew this was an extraordinary leader and mentor who was committed to St Vincent Hospital as well as the HIM profession.  I knew then this is where I wanted to be!

From a personal perspective, Mary Beth has provided support and guidance to my career path.  Working as a bedside RN for most of my adult career, found me training and learning the Clinical Documentation Improvement role.  I had a desire to share more of my clinical expertise when the part-time CDI Manager/part-time CDI position became available at St Vincent Hospital.  As noted, I knew from the first moment Mary Beth was a tenacious and outstanding leader whose team I wanted to be a part of.  Her tutelage has impacted every facet of my career supporting my progression and encouraging me to move forward from part-time CDI Manager for Massachusetts to the Market Director of CDI for Clinical Documentation Improvement Massachusetts/South Carolina.  She has facilitated and encouraged my reach within the organization to include a presence on the Utilization Management Committee, multiple presentations to the Executive teams and to our physician groups especially during the ICD-10 transition.

The most notable aspect of Mary Beth Brouillard’s mentoring is her enthusiasm for the HIM profession and her tenacity in offering the same tutelage to all the HIM professionals on a daily basis.  Not only does she provide expert educational opportunities within the HIM realm but she provides emotional and moral support and encouragement for all staff.  Mary Beth’s deep commitment to the highest HIM standards of practice is what drives her on a daily basis to monitor and provide counsel to all of her staff.  Her myriad of HIM experience as well as her commitment to ongoing education is one of the driving forces that she imparts to her team.  Mary Beth has guided multiple HIM professionals toward new opportunities within the HIM department and continually recognizes staff for outstanding achievements.  For example, Mary Beth nominated and the HIM team won the Star Performer Award in 2012 and 2015 the Employee Pillar Award both St Vincent Hospital.  Mary Beth continually fosters enthusiasm and support that the role each individual within the HIM department plays as paramount to the success of the organization.  Additionally, Mary Beth promotes and recognizes team successes and celebrates everyone’s accomplishments.

Mary Beth’s skill sets include but are not limited to respect, high moral and ethical standards, active listening, questioning skills, intuitiveness, thinking outside of the box, moving past the problem to identify its cause are just a few of what makes Mary Beth Brouillard the perfect selection for MaHIMA’s Outstanding Mentor Award.
