Walter Houlihan is the senior director of Health Information Management and Clinical Documentation at Baystate Health in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Walter has been a director of health information management in major teaching hospitals in New York City and Chicago over the past 35 years. He is past President of the Massachusetts Health Information Management Association (MaHIMA) and a past member of the Advisory Board of the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS).

In his current role, Walter oversees approximately 175 HIM and 24 CDI professionals and is responsible for the overall management of health information to assure accurate clinical documentation, coding, billing and administrative reporting of the optimal care rendered throughout the 5 hospitals and 95+ ambulatory sites that comprise Baystate Health

Walter continually searches for ways to enhance efficiencies through improved knowledge and technology enhancement to his team and willingly shares his accomplishments at MaHIMA meetings. For example, Walter shared his ICD-10 strategy and his Clinical Documentation Improvement process and served on many panel discussions.

Walter has served as the MaHIMA Annual Meeting director for multiple years.
He helps in the coordination of the annual MaHIMA Western Mass meetings ensuring that the members in the western part of the state receive on going education and training.

Walter’s volunteer leadership extends beyond MaHIMA. Walter took on the challenge to create an ‘CDI Summit’ as a collaboration between NYHIMA, MaHIMA and ACDIS. This collaboration has been successful in sponsoring three CDI Summits with over 200 attendees at each meeting.
