By Bettyann Carroll, RHIA
May, 2008
Hello Everyone! Your Board of Directors
recently returned from a successful 2008 Winter Team Talks
and Hill Day in Washington , DC . At this time there are three
proposals for action by the House of Delegates. These are:
Proposed Credential in Health Data Analytics
: the formal proposal for a new credential in the
form of a motion from the Council on Certification with a
revision to the standards for initial certification and the
standards for certification maintenance is expected this summer
or in October.
RHIA Exam Eligibility : the
formal proposal in the form of a motion from the Council on
certification with a revision to the standards for initial
certification and the standards for certification maintenance
is expected this summer and the vote is anticipated for October.
Certification Governance recommendations
: the formal proposal for the governance recommendations
will come forward in the form of a motion from the Council
on Certification with proposed bylaws amendments for HOD vote
in October.
More information is available on the State Leader/HOD CoP
and I encourage you all to visit the CoP and read more about
these topics. I'd like to take this opportunity to go into
a little more detail with regard to the RHIA Exam Eligibility
proposal, which stimulated a lot of discussion at Team Talks.
The AHIMA Council on Certification recommends that individuals
with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree and documented five
years of full-time HIM experience be considered eligible to
sit for the RHIA exam. This proposal expands eligibility to
write the RHIA exam from the existing four to six pathways.
Proposed Route 1 : Minimum bachelor's degree
and 5 years of full-time management-level work experience
in the MIM field, or, as a full-time educator in a college
or university either currently accredited by CAHIIIM or in
candidate status. The endorsement of two RHIA-credentialed
professionals will be required.
Proposed Route 2 : Master's degree in an
HIM-related curriculum, or, in Education and two years of
full-time management level work experience in the HIM field,
or, as a full-time educator in a college or university either
currently accredited by CAHIIM or in candidate status. The
endorsement of two RHIA-credentialed professionals will be
required.
The driving force behind this recommendation is the unmet
workforce demand for HIM professionals at the managerial level.
The subject of alternate paths to RHIA exam eligibility has
surfaced at various times in the past. I'd like to know what
you think about this proposed change to RHIA exam eligibility.
Your MaHIMA House of Delegates will be voting on your behalf
on this proposal and therefore we welcome your feedback pro
or Con. Please join me on the MaHIMA CoP to discuss!
I hope to see you all in Worcester at the annual 6-State
Conference!
